Finished - A birdie B5211

Another day, another B5211. I think I need a little intervention with this pattern, having made it now 5 or 6 times! I did similar mods to my last version - more room over the hips and an elasticated waist. This one is a lovely rayon, black with flying cream birds that I got from Darn Cheap Fabrics earlier in the year (they have a great range of printed rayons at the moment BTW. Just saying.)  and I've enough left over to make a nice gathered swishy skirt at some point (maybe next Autumn - I need another skirt like a hole in the head!).

Nothing too exciting or different on this one - I struggled with binding the neckline for some reason, so ended up doing a facing which I just stitched down like bias, and this time I hemmed the sleeves flat with a tiny hem before doing the side seams which was SO MUCH EASIER and quicker than doing them as a tube!

I love this fabric and I think it works well with a few different coloured belts - I think my favourite will be the tan belt (with tan sandals) but the black is chic too! What's your favourite?

I was really pleased to be able to use one of these buttons too - it is one of three that my mum gave me, beautiful jet buttons that belonged to my great grandmother. They are amazingly beautiful, very heavy and the backs are very scratched from many years of being moved to different garments. I know it doesn't seem like a very special use for it, but I can always move it to a more salubrious project in the future! In the meantime I really wanted to get some wear out of them!

No more B5211 for a while. Probably.

  2. This is such a great shape for you and very chic and simple! I like both black and tan accessories. I'd wear the black and black for a more "formal" look and tan for a more casual look. I never wear belts, I really need to learn to accessorise a bit more :)

    1. Thanks Jillian! I know what you mean about accessorising - it took me a long time to realise a belt doesn't actually need to hold anything up but is a great way of creating shape or breaking up something! It's hard to find great accessories - pounce on them when you can!

  3. I say black belt! But that's just me, they all look ace. I'm totally off to DCF to check out their rayons, thanks for the tip lady :)

Looks great with the tan belt and for when your season changes (a while yet for you) will be equally fab with cool tights / leggings and boots.

  10. Wow - gorgeous dress! (Why wouldn't you make this pattern 5 or 6 times when you've nailed it like this!) I love that fabric, the print is amazing. And your great grandmother's button is the perfect finishing touch - such a lovely sense of history and connection.
All three belts look great, but the brown gets my top vote :)
