Finished - Jedediah shorts

Full disclosure. These were finished months and months ago. September I think. It's taken this long for me to get the man to stand still enough to get some decent pics of these shorts - hence the slightly blurry iPhone shots. There's not much for me to say about the Thread Theory Jedediah pattern that hasn't already been said - it's fantastically drafted, and the instructions are excellent. The sewalong that Morgan ran back in August was great, in particular the video for inserting the fly closure. It was my first fly closure, and I reckon it's still my best (I've done a few since then) and I actually returned back to the instructions for a recent pair of shorts for me for clarification.

The fabric is a cotton twill with a little bit of stretch that I purchased from Mood in NYC on our honeymoon. I can't remember the size I made - I think it was a 36, which ended up being a bit big around the waist. My love is a RTW 34, but when I did the measurements he came in a size up - I think the 34 would actually have been perfect as I did take them in at the centre back about an inch. So that gives you a bit of an idea of how good the Thread Theory sizing is. They are a nice slim fit and very comfortable to wear. Apparently!

Here's an unironed shot of the shorts innards. The side seams are finished with self made bias, which is a nice touch if you don't have an overlocker or serger. It adds time of course, but it means if you want to roll the shorts up there's no manky edges visible. I also used it to finish the waistband and the zipper shield. These shorts also include my first flat-felled seams - I did the back yoke really nicely bit the inner legs are pretty crappy so no close ups!

The verdict - a very happy husband who loves them, but not as much as his bus!

  1. Noice! You've been going well with the un-selfish sewing. I need to practice a little more of that! Those look great on your man. Nice finishing of the seams, it makes them look so professionally finished. I am in the process of making my first pair of pants/shorts. Might need to get in touch for some fitting advice :)

  2. Oooh, lovely shorts (and he husband and the bus look great too!). I bought the Thread Theory patterns a while back but since the Mister has been away, it's been all about sewing for me, me, me. I also worry about sewing for him without being able to have him try on the stuff as I go, but perhaps the Henley could be done in his absence? In any case, your post has me thinking abut all the fun fabrics I could use to make shorts for him, but then again, he likes plain stuff so perhaps I should stick to his beloved navy blue.

    1. Yeah selfish sewing is hard! I just made sure I compared the finished measurements of his RTW shorts and thought it'd be pretty good from there. You can use fun stuff inside like the shorts lining and bias finishes? I'll be getting the henley pattern at some point too - my self drafted tee for him was a failure as well as the crappy burdastyle Pete pattern. Thread Theory is such a winner!

  3. Excellent! I bought the whole pattern packet months and months ago after Hubby told me he really liked these jeans and the Henley. Apparently though, I'm not as unselfish as you. I've never even opened one of the files. I must make them at some point this year . . . Yours are an inspiration!

    1. Thanks Gail! I know it's so hard to drag oneself away from lovely lady fabrics and patterns to dull manly things.... They are really good patterns though and I'd love to see the spin you put on them with your awesome skill!

    1. Thanks Rachel! I certainly wasn't perfectly gracious after finishing them - I think I handed them over with the comment 'don't ask for another pair for 6 months'!

  6. These are just fantastic! They look so professional and fit so well. You are the perfect ad for unselfish sewing! I've been meaning to embark on Thread Theory-based Man Sewing for a while now, but haven't got to it yet...Can't decide whether I want a bargain (all 4 PDF patterns in one) or the gorgeously packaged paper patterns more! Any plans for another Making for the Man Month this year?? I could use a deadline as motivation!

    1. Thanks Danielle! I think we should try another Making for the Man month again later in the year. I did make him a tee as well in August but it was terrible and so I'm not trying again until I get the Strathcona Henley pattern. I've promised him a cool Hawaii style shirt too - got a great pattern, just need some fabric!

  7. These look so nice! The bias throughout is such a nice touch. It looks like the husbo can enjoy the van and shorts simultaneously :)

  8. Thanks Morgan. It is a nice finishing detail when one is sans serger! I should make the effort to do it more with my own makes!
